College of Liberal Arts: Introduction to Equitable and Inclusive Teaching - Fall 2021

Workshop Description

Introduction to Equitable and Inclusive Teaching is an introductory workshop that introduces faculty to evidence-based teaching strategies for equity and inclusion, supports faculty in developing an inclusive course climate, encourages faculty to reflect on the impacts of social identities in higher education teaching and learning environments, and supports faculty in further developing an equitable and inclusive teaching lens. Participating in this program is a way for you to contribute in concrete and powerful ways to our goals of making Cal Poly more equitable and inclusive.

College of Liberal Arts Cohort

With sponsorship from the College of Liberal Arts Dean's Office, this fall the CTLT will offer this cohort with up to 15 spaces reserved for faculty from the college. Please apply here to express interest in participating in this college-specific cohort. Admitted applicants will be notified by September 27, 2021.

Stipend Information and Time Commitment

This workshop incorporates a 5-part asynchronous online course (offered through EdX) and synchronous meetings for discussion. This workshop is designed for faculty and instructors who currently teach at Cal Poly. A $200 stipend is available for those who complete all components of the workshop: the online course (including participation in discussions), 6 synchronous meetings, and a final assignment for the program that reflects change(s) made in one’s courses on the basis of this experience (more information on deliverables will be shared with the cohort at the first meeting). Please read the CTLT Stipend eligibility policy to see if you are eligible. Partial stipends for partial participation are not available. Additionally, CTLT will reimburse participants who are eligible for the stipend for the cost of the verified certificate for the asynchronous course through EdX. 

Time commitment is 3-5 hours per week for a total of 18-30 hours, depending on prior knowledge, skill level and experience.

Asynchronous Course

For Fall 2021 all participants will enroll in and complete Cornell’s Teaching & Learning in the Diverse Classroom asynchronous EdX course. The asynchronous course will begin after our October 1 meeting. 

Synchronous Meetings and Additional Assignments

The course will be supplemented by additional assignments that extend faculty learning. The cohort will meet for six synchronous Zoom meetings with the facilitators to discuss the each week's course content and its application to teaching at Cal Poly.
