Teaching Inclusion and Diversity Everywhere (TIDE) | Summer-Fall 2019


Creating a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive campus is the responsibility of all campus community members, including faculty. This professional development opportunity is designed for Cal Poly educators who seek to incorporate inclusive teaching practices and infuse diversity principles into their teaching consistent with the campus’s Diversity Learning Objectives (DLOs). The program contributes to progress on two of Cal Poly’s university-wide diversity imperatives: (1) “enhance [the] campus climate” and (2) “exemplify inclusive excellence in Learn by Doing, scholarship, teaching, and learning.” Faculty participation in this program can help departments and colleges make progress on their diversity, equity and inclusion goals and contribute to a more inclusive campus community. This is the fourth year for this program, which launched in 2016 as a collaboration of the CTLT and the Office of University Diversity and Inclusion (OUDI).


The purpose of TIDE is to strengthen faculty’s expertise in creating inclusive and equitable educational experiences that support the campus's Diversity Learning Objectives (DLOs).

Learning Objectives

As a result of the program, participants will:

  1. Demonstrate the knowledge and motivation to utilize inclusive teaching practices and infuse principles of diversity and equity into their educational practices.
  2. Produce revised course materials that reflect evidence-based inclusive teaching practices and infuse of principles of diversity and equity into the curriculum.
  3. Formulate a plan for assessing the efficacy of instructional changes made as a result of TIDE.
  4. Implement redesigned course elements and assess their efficacy.
  5. Gain the benefits of active membership in a cohort of colleagues invested in ongoing collaboration to continue the work accomplished in this program.

Program Description

This program creates a community of colleagues who collaborate as they deepen their personal insights in, and practical knowledge of, diversity principles and inclusive teaching practices. The integrated program first introduces participants to inclusive teaching practices and principles of diversity and equity, and then provides support for applying those insights to teaching and learning experiences. The extended program begins in early summer 2019 and continues through Fall Quarter 2019, and includes:

  • TIDE Institute: Teaching Inclusion and Diversity Everywhere (Tue-Fri, June 18-21, 2019; four days).
  • Summer 2019 online cohort exchanges and activities to maintain momentum from June institute and to prep for the TIDE implementation workshop in late August.
  • TIDE implementation workshop: three days designed to apply insights from the Summer Institute to make revisions in each participant's selected course (Tue-Thurs, Aug. 27-29, 2019).
  • Several cohort gatherings (TBD) during Fall Quarter for participants to share experiences and insights from teaching redesigned courses.
  • Formative feedback and student assessments for redesigned courses implemented and shared during Fall Quarter.
  • Optional participation in the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Community of Practice beginning in Fall 2019. This Community of Practice brings together alums from all years of the TIDE program to offer continued support and motivation for their work on diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Program Outcomes

Participants will gain scholarly and personal insights into diversity and inclusion as an educator in their discipline and as a member of the campus community. Artifacts that will demonstrate that development include:

  1. A well-informed, polished diversity statement for WPAF use.
  2. A diversity statement for use in a Fall Quarter 2019 (or other AY 2019-20) course syllabus.
  3. A revised syllabus and course materials for a Fall Quarter 2019 (or other AY 2019-20) course reflecting infusion of inclusive teaching practices and infusion of diversity and equity principles.
  4. An “Inclusive Instruction Technique” description of a method implemented appropriate for the intended discipline to add to the cohort’s collection. Template and examples will be provided.
  5. An assessment plan to measure the effectiveness of course elements and related student outcomes: Data collection, analyses and intended steps to respond to findings.


Tenure-line faculty and lecturers with 2019-20 teaching assignments are welcome from all disciplines, including those areas of study not typically associated with diversity and inclusion learning goals.


Due Friday, April 5, 2019. Applicants will be notified by Friday, April 12, 2019.

Selection Criteria

The goal is 10-15 participants with representation from all colleges, including those not typically associated with diversity and inclusion learning goals. The stronger proposals will:

  • Select a specific course for the redesign with broader impact on the campus community (e.g., significant student enrollment, regularly scheduled, required in a program, and/or General Education courses).
  • Select a course that is scheduled to be taught by the applicant for Fall Quarter 2019 (NOTE: Winter and Spring courses are eligible).
  • Indicate participant’s commitment to full participation the entire program calendar.


Participants who successfully complete the program and deliver required curriculum redesign documentation will earn a $1,500 stipend. (Stipend eligibility is subject to university policies.)
