POGIL Workshop

Process-Oriented Guided Inquiry Learning

Do your students ever miss the connections between lab and lecture? Do they ever follow lab directions passively, without stopping to consider why they are doing a particular step in the experiment?  If so, consider trying Process-Oriented Guided Inquiry Learning (POGIL). In a POGIL lab, students are not told at the beginning of lab what they are going to learn. Instead, they are confronted with a question, such as “How does molecular structure affect melting point?” They use preliminary data to propose their own theory, and then plan experiments to test their theory. After the experiment, students use the data to refine their theory. This cycle is repeated at least once, and sometimes several times, in a single experiment. At the conclusion of the lab, students are given application questions; the students work their answers to these questions into their lab reports. As a result of these steps, students are engaged throughout the lab session.
