The Center for Teaching, Learning, and Technology (CTLT) invites applications for the role of Faculty Fellow for Teaching Innovation and Student Success.
Aligned with the CSU Student Success Framework and Cal Poly's Learn by Doing philosophy, CTLT is committed to advancing innovative teaching practices that foster student engagement, belonging, achievement, and success. CTLT seeks a faculty partner who is passionate about the future of teaching and learning and who can help promote transformative educational practices that create dynamic, interactive, equitable, and engaging learning environments.
The Faculty Fellow will collaborate closely with CTLT leadership to advance Cal Poly's Teacher-Scholar Model through the development and promotion of innovative teaching practices, emerging pedagogies, and evidence-informed approaches to student success. Areas of focus may include active learning, experiential and project-based learning, peer and collaborative learning, gamification, microlearning, artificial intelligence (AI), and other emerging technologies and pedagogical innovations.
The Faculty Fellow will play a critical role in identifying, developing, and sharing effective teaching practices that support student success while helping faculty navigate the rapidly evolving landscape of teaching and learning. The Fellow will engage with faculty across disciplines, collaborate with campus partners, consult with the CTLT Advisory Board, and contribute to institutional conversations regarding teaching innovation, faculty development, and the future of learning at Cal Poly.
Appointment and Compensation
The appointment is for Fall Semester 2026 and Spring Semester 2027.
The fellowship includes up to 4 Weighted Teaching Units (WTUs) per semester, and the successful candidate will retain their faculty appointment in their home department. A summer appointment may also be possible based on the Fellow's availability and CTLT programming needs.
Duties and Responsibilities
The Faculty Fellow for Teaching Innovation and Student Success will:
- Collaborate closely with CTLT leadership to identify strategic opportunities to advance innovative teaching and student success across the university.
- Promote and advance Cal Poly's Teacher-Scholar Model through faculty development initiatives that integrate teaching excellence, scholarly inquiry, innovation, and student success.
- Identify, evaluate, and promote effective uses of artificial intelligence and emerging technologies in teaching and learning, including pedagogical applications that enhance student engagement, learning, and success.
- Develop materials, activities, and content for online Canvas modules, faculty resources, and professional learning experiences that support innovative teaching and student success.
- Develop, lead, or co-facilitate faculty development opportunities such as workshops, learning communities, institutes, peer consultations, and faculty learning events focused on teaching innovation and student success.
- Identify and promote evidence-informed strategies related to course design, active learning, classroom engagement, assessment, experiential learning, project-based learning, and other innovative pedagogical approaches.
- Assess opportunities for integrating student success data into CTLT programming and faculty development efforts.
- Develop resources or guides that support faculty in understanding and acting upon student success information within their courses, programs, or departments.
- Contribute to the scholarship and dissemination of innovative teaching practices, including documenting, evaluating, and sharing promising approaches related to AI, active learning, experiential learning, and student engagement.
- Serve as a faculty thought partner to CTLT leadership on emerging trends and opportunities related to teaching innovation, instructional technology, and the future of learning.
- Collaborate with CTLT leadership and campus partners to explore the development of innovation-focused learning environments, including experiential learning spaces that support faculty experimentation, creativity, and student engagement.
- Serve on and contribute to the CTLT Advisory Board, helping gather faculty feedback and strengthen alignment between CTLT initiatives and faculty needs.
- Determine and utilize a data-informed assessment plan for measuring the effectiveness and impact of initiatives undertaken as part of this fellowship.
Required Qualifications
- Tenured or tenure-track faculty member at Cal Poly.
- Demonstrated expertise in innovative teaching practices and their impact on student success.
- Demonstrated commitment to supporting student success and belonging through inclusive and engaging teaching practices.
- Demonstrated experience supporting the success of students from historically underserved or underrepresented communities, including first-generation students, low-income students, students of color, transfer students, and students with disabilities.
Desired Qualifications
- Experience with innovative pedagogies such as active learning, experiential learning, project-based learning, gamification, collaborative learning, or technology-enhanced instruction.
- Experience integrating artificial intelligence or emerging technologies into teaching, learning, curriculum design, faculty development, or scholarly work.
- Demonstrated interest in advancing Cal Poly's Teacher-Scholar Model through innovative and evidence-informed approaches to teaching, learning, scholarship, and student success.
- Experience facilitating faculty development, mentoring colleagues, or leading professional learning opportunities.
- Experience developing faculty support materials, including resource guides, webpages, Canvas modules, toolkits, or other instructional resources.
- Experience conducting, supporting, or disseminating scholarship related to teaching, learning, instructional innovation, educational technology, or student success.
- Experience working with actionable student success data, including CSU dashboards, Course Equity Portal data, or related assessment tools.
- Excellent communication, facilitation, and interpersonal skills, including the ability to engage faculty in dialogue around innovative teaching and student success.
- Experience collaborating across divisions with faculty, staff, administrators, and students.
- Faculty leadership or administrative experience related to teaching innovation, curriculum development, faculty development, student success, or educational transformation.
