Examining Whiteness: Summer 2021

Examining Whiteness is open to all interested participants, but is specifically designed to encourage white educators to critically examine and gain a deeper understanding of systemic racism, whiteness, and white racial identity. We meet together for 6 meetings of 90 minutes each. During these meetings faculty and staff have the opportunity to engage in conversations based on selections from the nationally recognized BARWE (Building Anti-Racist White Educators) curriculum. Designed for White teachers in K-12 education, BARWE is a “reading and inquiry series [that] provides a monthly set of tools for learning, introspection and having conversations about issues of racism in our schools, classrooms and communities.” The Examining Whiteness facilitators have adapted and added to the BARWE curriculum for relevance to higher education staff and faculty. Additionally, the facilitators have developed the 6-part foundational workshop to introduce key concepts and frameworks.

Who is this Space For? Following the BARWE model, this space is intended to work toward developing White antiracist educators. The space is for anyone who is interested in engaging in opportunities to discuss, learn, and challenge one another on topics related to whiteness, white racial identity, and working toward antiracism. Though these discussions are centered around whiteness and white identity, all who are interested are welcome to participate.
