All CSU faculty and academic staff are cordially invited to attend the CSU Symposium on University Teaching/PolyTeach joint conference at Cal Poly Pomona on April 13 & 14, 2018.  This is the third time that Cal Poly Pomona has hosted the CSU Symposium. It will be a joint event with Cal Poly Pomona’s own PolyTeach event, which focuses on innovative uses of technology to support student learning.

The Symposium is an annual event presented by the Faculty Development Council, which is comprised of directors of teaching centers throughout the California State University System. The purpose of the Symposium is to provide a forum for CSU educators to connect with other dedicated colleagues to share their insights and to learn new ideas that enhance student success.

This year's conference theme is “Productive Disruption.”  What are we doing in our classrooms that’s out of the ordinary and helps students think more deeply, achieve more ambitiously, succeed more forthrightly?  The agenda includes plenty of time for networking and collegial conversation among faculty from around the CSU.

Here are some highlights:

Friday, April 13

  • Robert Talbert, Grand Valley State University – 3-hr hands-on workshop “Flipping the Classroom”
  • Deb Pires, UCLA – 2-hr hands-on workshop “Active Learning with iClicker”
  • Janine Kremling, CSU San Bernardino – Plenary “Overcoming Resistance to Productive Disruption – What We’re Learning from Our Students
  • Mixer & Reception

Saturday, April 14

  • Faculty presentations – concurrent oral sessions plus breakfast with faculty poster presentation session & poster plenary discussion
  • Uri Treisman, UT Austin Professor of Mathematics & MacArthur Foundation Fellow – Plenary Keynote. NOTE: Uri will also have a morning breakout session for Math & STEM faculty
  • Networking lunch

Several Cal Poly (SLO) educators will be presenting as well:

  • Brian Self, Jim Widmann, John Chen (ME): "Disrupting Traditional Predictors of Success: Non-cognitive and Affective Measures of Students"
  • Cesar Torres Bustamante (LARCH): "Studio motivation in design and in learning to design"
  • Solina Lindahl (ECON): "The Dismal Science Art Project: Why Economics (and maybe other disciplines) need an arts injection"
  • Luanne Fose (CTLT) and Martin Mehl (COMS): "Eliminating the Dreaded Red Pen & Improving Instructor Feedback Through Video Assessment"
  • Patrick O'Sullivan (CTLT): "Learning Space Principles for 21st Century Learning"
  • Patrick O'Sullivan (CTLT): "Dump Your Teaching Philosophy -- Craft A Teaching Mission Statement Instead"

The conference is a terrific value for a high-quality opportunity ($55 plus small handling fee for both days). NOTE: CTLT will reimburse the registration fee for all Cal Poly faculty. After registration, send receipt to CTLT (ctlt@calpoly.edu).
