ETP Application Form | Gen Ed Cohort

This is the application form for the General Education Cohort of the Effective Teaching Program set to run during AY2020-21. Faculty who teach Gen Ed courses are the priority for this cohort, including lecturers as well as tenure-line faculty. The application form includes items that are specific to the purpose for the General Education Cohort, and those items will be considered when finalizing the selection process for participants.

For all cohorts, this grant-funded program is an extraordinary opportunity to enhance faculty's capacity to strengthen student success at Cal Poly. Applicants' head/chair will also be asked for a brief statement of support. Selection of participants will be guided by the principle of seeking to generate the most long-term benefits for participants and Cal Poly students consistent with campus priorities for curriculum improvement.

NOTE: Applicants can apply for more than one cohort, and would need to apply for each separately. To apply to one of the other cohorts (i.e., Rigorous and Equitable or Early Career Faculty) then return to the ETP home page (link below) and follow the link to the appropriate application form.

Please identify the course (number and name) that you propose as the focus of your participation in this program. (Ex: BIO 161: Introduction to Cell and Molecular Biology).
Please indicate where your focus course fits in the Gen Ed curriculum (e.g., "Area B2")
Please briefly explain why this course is a good fit for your experiences in this cohort program. What are your priorities to improve this course and to enhance your skills teaching it?
For your focus course, how many students do you typically teach each academic year? (# sections you teach x number of students/section)? (Estimate is fine!)
For your focus course, how many total students are taught per year in all sections of this course during a typical academic year, not just the sections you teach? (Estimates are fine, consider checking with department chair or staff.)
Briefly explain the reasons why you are a good fit to participate in this program and specifically the goals for this cohort. Based on your experiences teaching this course, in what ways would your experiences in this program result in improving student success?
To maximize the benefits of the program for the campus as well as to maximize the long-term benefits for participants, those who complete the program will be invited to share their insights and knowledge with peers (particularly those who teach the same GE course) in informal ways. Please explain briefly why you are a good fit for this colleague mentor role and indicate your interest in and commitment to this opportunity to contribute to the campus community of educators.
Two complementary themes for this program are to (1) strengthen participants' virtual instruction skills and (2) strengthen your contributions to DEI (diversity, equity, inclusion) in the curriculum. Please briefly describe your current abilities in these two areas and explain how participating in this program would enhance your capabilities in each as an educator.
If there are other factors that you consider to be relevant regarding your application for this cohort, you can share them briefly here.
Each applicant's department head/chair will be asked for a brief statement of support. Please provide your department head/chair email.
If you are applying for more than one cohort, please indicate which one in addition to this one. (NOTE: You must complete an application for each cohort.)
