HHMI Faculty Learning Community: Intersectionality and Higher Education- Fall 2023

Learning Community Description

This fall the Cal Poly HHMI team will offer a faculty learning community to learn about how we can evaluate inclusive teaching and how we might then use that evaluation in higher education (including in faculty promotion and tenure). Participants in this faculty learning community will read a selection of chapters from Intersectionality and Higher Education: Identity and Inequality on College Campuses (2019), edited by W. Carson Byrd, Rachelle J. Brunn-Bevel, Sarah M. Ovink. Participants will have access to the book, both in paper format and electronically. The learning community will meet to discuss the book and its application to Cal Poly, and produce artifacts to reflect our learning.

This faculty learning community is supported by Cal Poly’s Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) Inclusive Excellence 3 grant.  HHMI IE3’s initiative was formed to challenge U.S. colleges and universities to substantially and sustainably build capacity for belonging, especially for those who have been historically excluded from the sciences. Cal Poly applied for this funding to focus on how we evaluate effective inclusive teaching, and then use that evaluation in the rewards system for faculty including faculty recruitment, retention, promotion, and tenure.

Fall 2023 participants will have the opportunity to choose to participate in linked Faculty Learning Communities in Winter and Spring 2024.

Meetings

Meetings will take place on Thursdays from 1:30-3:00 pm on:

  • October 12, 26
  • November 9, 30
  • December 14

The first meeting will be held in person (with a hybrid option) and all subsequent meetings will be held on Zoom.

Stipend

A stipend of $500 will be available for faculty who are able to commit to completing the reading, attending at least four of the five scheduled meetings, and producing a required artifact to demonstrate their learning. Faculty who are not able to earn a stipend are still invited to participate.
