Race to the Future? Reimagining the Default Settings of Technology & Society
Join us for Dr. Ruha Benjamin's keynote presentation and Q&A for the CLA Inclusion Starts with Me Teach On! Dr. Benjamin's latest book, Race After Technology: Abolitionist Tools for the New Jim Code (Polity 2019) examines the relationship between machine bias and systemic racism, analyzing specific cases of “discriminatory design” and offering tools for a socially-conscious approach to tech development.
Dr. Ruha Benjamin is an Associate Professor in the Department of African American Studies at Princeton University, where she studies the social dimensions of science, technology and medicine, race and citizenship, knowledge and power. She is also the founder of the JUST DATA Lab and the author of two books, People’s Science (Stanford) and Race After Technology (Polity), and editor of Captivating Technology (Duke). She writes, teaches, and speaks widely about the relationship between knowledge and power, race and citizenship, health and justice.
